After weeks of sweltering heat and anxious waits, Odisha is finally set to welcome the life-giving southwest monsoon.
According to the latest forecast shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions are turning highly favourable for the monsoon winds to march into several parts of the state within the next 6 to 8 days.
“Favourable weather conditions are likely for the southwest monsoon to advance into some parts of Odisha in the next 6–8 days,” Popular weather scientist, Umashankar Das, informed on X.

For a state where agriculture supports millions and reservoirs are running low after a long summer, this update feels like a long-overdue promise of relief.
Odisha typically sees the southwest monsoon make its entry around mid-June, bringing the heavy rains essential for paddy transplantation and other kharif crops. This year, the forecast aligns perfectly with seasonal patterns, offering timely hope to farmers who have been monitoring every cloud in the sky. Meteorologists note that the monsoon trough and cross-equatorial flow are gaining strength, creating the perfect setup for the rains to push northward from the Bay of Bengal.
Residents in coastal districts like Puri, Ganjam, and Kendrapara, as well as interior regions, can expect an increase in thundershowers and a welcome drop in temperatures once the monsoon arrives. While the forecast is for “some parts” initially, IMD officials indicate that widespread rainfall across the state could follow shortly after the initial onset.
For now, though, the message from the skies is optimistic. Pack away the umbrellas for just a little longer — soon they’ll be needed every day. The southwest monsoon is knocking on Odisha’s door, and this time, it looks ready to stay.
