The ceremonial Snana Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra was performed with great devotion at the Snana Mandap in Puri on Monday, drawing thousands of devotees to witness one of the most significant rituals in the annual Rath Yatra festivities.
The sacred Jalabhishek (ceremonial bathing ritual) was conducted amid the chanting of Vedic mantras, devotional kirtans, the rhythmic beating of gongs and the resonant sound of conch shells, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
As per centuries-old traditions, the Holy Trinity was brought to the Snana Mandap from the sanctum of the Shree Jagannath Temple in the elaborate Pahandi procession. The deities were then ceremonially bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water drawn from the temple’s sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well).
Following the ceremonial bath, the deities are traditionally believed to fall ill and enter the Anasara period, during which they remain away from public view for about a fortnight. During this time, temple servitors perform special rituals and offer traditional herbal preparations before the deities reappear for Nabajaubana Darshan, ahead of the world-famous Rath Yatra.
Snana Yatra is one of the most important annual festivals associated with Lord Jagannath and marks the beginning of the final preparations for the grand Rath Yatra, when the sibling deities embark on their annual journey to the Gundicha Temple.
The vibrant rituals, devotional music and participation of thousands of devotees once again highlighted Puri’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, making the festival a profound expression of faith and tradition.
