Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has taken charge as the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This appointment marks the first time the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will have two principal secretaries, with P.K. Mishra continuing in his role as Principal Secretary-1.
Shaktikanta Das, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1980 batch, brings a wealth of experience in finance and governance to his new role. He previously served as the RBI Governor from December 2018 until his retirement in December 2024. During his tenure, Das navigated numerous global economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
The decision to appoint Das as Principal Secretary-2 was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. His appointment is co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders. Das’s extensive experience in fiscal and monetary policy is expected to be a valuable asset to the PMO, especially in the current uncertain geo-economic situation.
Das will work alongside P.K. Mishra, who has been serving as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister since 2019. This move is seen as an effort to bolster the PMO’s financial management expertise and ensure stability in India’s economic policies.
