Following the official launch of its promotional campaign on Shah Rukh Khan’s 61st birthday, the upcoming action-thriller King has reportedly shattered pre-release business records across Indian cinema.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film has secured an estimated ₹665 crore in pre-release non-theatrical and theatrical distribution deals ahead of its December 24, 2026 theatrical release.
Despite these record-setting sales, trade analysts indicate that King carries immense box office pressure, needing to cross approximately ₹800 crore gross globally—matching recent benchmarks set by Jailer 2 and Chhaava—to ensure profitability for its distribution partners.
Breakdown of the ₹665 Crore Pre-Release Business
King has locked in major distribution agreements across theatrical and non-theatrical streams:
- India Theatrical Rights: Acquired by Pen Marudhar for a reported ₹250 crore, marking one of the highest domestic distribution advances for a Hindi feature.
- Overseas Theatrical Rights: Phars Films secured international rights for a record Minimum Guarantee (MG) of ₹175 crore, making it the first Indian film to cross the ₹100 crore overseas MG milestone.
- Digital Streaming Rights: Sold to Netflix for a base price of ₹150 crore. The agreement includes a performance-based rider, meaning the payout could fluctuate depending on box office metrics.
- Music & Satellite Rights: Music rights fetched ₹65 crore (featuring the lead single “Tu Mil Jaaye”), while satellite television rights were locked at ₹25 crore.
Production Budget and Break-Even Thresholds
While King was initially conceptualized on a ₹300 crore scale, extended production schedules and high-octane action sequences pushed the core budget to approximately ₹400 crore. With marketing and promotion costs estimated at ₹50 crore alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s nominal stakeholder fees, the film’s total landing cost sits near ₹550 crore.
To ensure distributors recover their combined ₹425 crore theatrical investment, King will need a net domestic recovery of around ₹400 crore (₹500 crore gross) and an overseas net of ₹150 crore (₹300 crore gross).
Cast and Crew
Jointly produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures, King features Shah Rukh Khan alongside Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, and Abhishek Bachchan.
