India has officially introduced chip-enabled e-passports, marking a significant advancement in travel security and identity authentication.
As part of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0, the initiative aims to prevent fraud and enhance efficiency in passport issuance.
High-Tech Security Features
E-passports come embedded with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption, ensuring robust protection of biometric and personal data. This technology helps prevent tampering and identity theft.
Where Are E-Passports Available?
The rollout has begun across 12 cities, including Bhubaneswar, Delhi, Chennai, Jaipur, and Surat. Officials confirm that the e-passports will gradually expand to all Passport Seva Kendras nationwide by mid-2025.
Validity of Current Passports
Existing paper-based passports remain valid until their expiration dates. Citizens can opt for the e-passport upon renewal or new issuance.
Looking Ahead
With this modern upgrade, India is aligning with global standards, ensuring seamless international travel while fortifying identity verification.
