Shock spread across Sambalpur University on Tuesday after a student was found dead inside the Brahmaputra Hostel.
The incident created panic among students and staff as police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
The deceased, identified as Suraj Kujur, was a second-year Economics student and a native of Kutra in Sundargarh district. He had been staying alone in Room No. 52 of the hostel. According to reports, Suraj did not appear for examinations on Monday, raising concerns among his peers. On Tuesday morning, hostel inmates discovered him hanging in his room and immediately alerted university authorities.
Burla Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and recovered the body. Officials confirmed that the body has been taken into custody and will be sent for post-mortem examination once his family members arrive on campus.
Preliminary investigation suggested suicide, but police stated that the exact cause of death will be determined only after the post-mortem report. Further inquiry is underway to establish the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the university community. Students expressed shock and sorrow, while discussions on mental health support in educational institutions resurfaced. Experts emphasised the urgent need for proactive emotional and psychological assistance on campuses to prevent such tragedies.
Suraj’s death highlights the growing importance of student well-being and the responsibility of universities to provide counselling and support systems. Sambalpur University now faces renewed calls to strengthen mental health initiatives for its students.
