The controversy surrounding stand-up comedian Pranit More has intensified after Maharashtra Cyber Police registered a case against him over remarks made during a comedy show that sparked nationwide outrage.

The action comes days after a video clip from More’s performance went viral on social media, triggering criticism from activists, influencers, and members of the public over comments perceived as promoting misogynistic attitudes and undermining women’s dignity.

What Triggered the Controversy?

The backlash began when a clip from More’s show surfaced online featuring an audience interaction. During the exchange, a man claimed he had spent ₹370 on biryani during a date and suggested he deserved a “return” on that expense.

The audience member was later identified as 23-year-old Himanshu Jangra. Critics accused him of making inappropriate remarks and publicly disclosing personal details about his date.

What further fuelled public anger was the reaction during the show, where laughter from the crowd continued and the comments were not challenged or interrupted.

Cyber Police Register Case

Following widespread criticism and complaints, Maharashtra Cyber Police registered a case against Pranit More on Thursday.

The development marks a significant escalation in the controversy, which has dominated social media discussions over the past week.

Authorities have not yet disclosed all legal provisions invoked in the case, but investigations are underway.

NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also stepped into the matter and issued summons to both Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the viral video and media reports, the commission expressed concern that the remarks appeared to glorify sexual coercion and non-consensual behaviour.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has sought a detailed report from Haryana Police regarding the incident and the actions taken so far.

A hearing in the matter has been scheduled for June 22.

NCW Raises Concerns Over Women’s Safety

In its statement, the commission noted that normalising behaviour that disregards consent and personal dignity can have serious consequences for women’s safety and societal attitudes toward gender-based violence.

The NCW has requested information on:

  • The status of any FIRs registered in the case.
  • Authentication of the viral video.
  • The role of organisers, performers, and venue management.
  • Measures to prevent entertainment platforms from promoting harmful behaviour.

Audience Member Loses Job

The controversy has also impacted Himanshu Jangra professionally.

Reports indicate that the Gurugram-based company where he worked as a web developer terminated his employment following the viral incident.

The company reportedly cited concerns over the remarks and the negative attention generated by the controversy.

Pranit More Issues Apology

Amid mounting criticism, Pranit More issued a public apology and clarified that the audience member’s comments did not reflect his personal views.

However, many social media users argued that the comedian should have intervened during the exchange instead of allowing the conversation to continue.

The incident has since sparked a broader debate about accountability in live comedy shows, audience interactions, and the responsibilities of performers when potentially harmful comments are made on stage.
