Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has announced a series of tribute and safety measures ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, including reserving 11 seats at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in memory of fans who lost their lives in a stampede last year.

The decision comes as the franchise prepares to return to its home venue, with the season opener scheduled against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28.

Permanent Tribute to Fans

RCB CEO Rajesh Menon and Director of Cricket Mo Bobat confirmed that 11 seats will remain permanently unoccupied during all home matches as a mark of respect for the victims of the June 4 tragedy.

In addition, players will wear jersey number 11 during practice sessions throughout the IPL 2026 season. A memorial plaque will also be installed near the stadium’s inner entrance, creating a dedicated space for remembrance.

“This is a tribute to our fans, who will always remain a part of our journey,” Menon said.

Enhanced Safety and Crowd Management

Following the incident, the franchise has implemented extensive safety upgrades to ensure better crowd control and monitoring.

RCB has introduced AI-powered CCTV systems across the stadium premises, including stands, concourses, and surrounding areas. The system, supported by an AI tool named Jarvis, will provide real-time crowd data and alerts, enabling authorities to manage situations more effectively.

The live CCTV feed will also be accessible to the Commissioner’s office for continuous monitoring during matchdays.

Infrastructure and Protocol Upgrades

The franchise has invested approximately ₹7 crore to strengthen stadium infrastructure. Enhancements include:

  • Installation of multiple baggage scanners
  • Establishment of advanced command centres
  • Redesigned entry and exit points
  • Improved fan movement protocols

Additionally, metro access will be facilitated for ticket holders to streamline transportation and reduce congestion.

Return to Home Ground

RCB is set to play five home matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium during IPL 2026, while the remaining two games will be hosted in Raipur.

The return marks a significant step after competitive matches were temporarily halted at the venue following the tragic incident.

Conclusion

With a combination of heartfelt tribute and strengthened safety measures, RCB aims to honour its fans while ensuring a secure and well-managed environment for the upcoming IPL season. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to fan welfare and responsible event management in Indian cricket.
