Jake and Romy Reiner, the children of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, have issued their first public statement following the deaths of their parents and the arrest of their brother, Nick Reiner, in connection with the case.
In a statement released on Wednesday and quoted by People, the siblings expressed profound grief and asked for privacy as they cope with the tragedy.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the statement read.
Jake and Romy also acknowledged the widespread support they have received. “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support from family, friends, and people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave,” they added.
The statement was released on the same day their brother, Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in court for the first time. During the hearing, he waived his right to enter a plea and faces two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities allege that Nick Reiner fatally stabbed both of his parents. He was taken into custody on Sunday and is currently being held without bail.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Nick Reiner has been identified as the suspect in the homicide deaths. Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday. The county medical examiner later confirmed that both died due to multiple sharp force injuries.
Police have not disclosed further details regarding the evidence or a possible motive. Nick Reiner remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles and is scheduled for his next court hearing on January 7.
