Authorities in Malkangiri district launched an investigation after a residential school student was found pregnant, raising serious concerns about student safety and accountability.
Officials confirmed that the incident occurred at SSD Residential Higher Secondary School in Govindpalli. A first-year student tested positive during a routine medical check conducted by the school matron after returning from the Dussehra vacation. The school authorities immediately informed senior officials and lodged a complaint at Mathili police station.
District Welfare Officer Srinivas Achari, the Child Development Project Officer, and representatives from the District Child Protection Unit visited the school. They spoke with the student and initiated a detailed inquiry. Achari stated that preliminary findings revealed the student developed an illicit relationship with a youth from her village during the holiday period.
Police began a formal investigation to identify those responsible. Forensic and medical reports will determine the circumstances of the pregnancy. Officials assured that strict action would follow once the inquiry establishes accountability.
The case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of students in residential schools. Authorities emphasised the importance of monitoring, counselling, and safeguarding measures to prevent such incidents. The district administration pledged to strengthen oversight and ensure justice for the victim.
Community members expressed concern and demanded transparency in the investigation. They urged police to act swiftly and protect the rights of students. The incident highlighted the need for stronger child protection mechanisms in educational institutions across the region.
