As the iconic Rath Yatra 2025 reaches its halfway mark, the sacred city of Puri is preparing for the Bahuda Yatra—the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra to the Shri Jagannath Temple.
A key ritual in this phase, known as ‘Dakhina Moda’, is being performed today. This ceremony involves turning the three chariots—Nandighosa, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana—southward from their current north-facing position in front of Gundicha Temple.
On the auspicious occasion of Shasthi Tithi, the chariots will be aligned toward Nakachana Dwara, the southern gate of the temple. This symbolic movement sets the stage for the Bahuda Yatra, which is scheduled for July 5.
Hera Panchami Observed with Devotion
On Tuesday night, the Hera Panchami ritual was observed with grandeur and deep emotion. In this ritual, Goddess Mahalaxmi, left behind at Srimandir during the Yatra, visits Gundicha Temple in a gesture of divine displeasure and symbolically damages Lord Jagannath’s chariot. She then returns to the temple, signifying the tensions between the divine couple.
Thousands of devotees witnessed the dramatic ritual at Gundicha Temple and Saradhabali, adding to the spiritual atmosphere.
Upcoming Rituals After Bahuda Yatra
Following the Bahuda Yatra on July 5, several other major rituals will conclude the Rath Yatra festivities:
-
Suna Besha (July 6): The deities are adorned in golden ornaments while seated on their chariots at Singhadwara (Lion’s Gate)—a breathtaking sight attracting huge crowds.
-
Adhara Pana: A traditional sweet drink is offered to the deities on their chariots.
-
Niladri Bije: The final ritual where the deities are ceremoniously brought back into the sanctum of Shri Jagannath Temple. This includes a tender and symbolic reconciliation between Lord Jagannath and Goddess Mahalaxmi, completing the divine narrative that began with Hera Panchami.
With Dakhina Moda taking place today, the spiritual fervour in Puri is rising once again as devotees gear up to witness the concluding moments of this cherished annual celebration.
