A nursing student from Raighar block in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district is in critical condition after allegedly attempting suicide upon discovering that a youth, reportedly infatuated with her, leaked her private photographs on social media.
According to sources, the girl consumed poison on Tuesday, unable to bear the humiliation and distress caused by the online circulation of her images. The accused, who had been obsessively pursuing her despite her disinterest, is said to have uploaded the photos to his social media accounts, triggering public outrage.
The student’s family filed a formal complaint at the Raighar Police Station, prompting authorities to record the victim’s statement and initiate an investigation. However, the accused remains absconding.
Family members allege that this was not the first incident of harassment. The same youth had reportedly assaulted the girl in a public marketplace days earlier. When her father attempted to file a First Information Report (FIR), he was advised to submit a medical report, delaying formal action.
“As it was already late, I couldn’t get the medical report that day. The next morning, I informed the villagers. Her condition is now critical,” the victim’s father said.
Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, but no official update has been provided on the arrest or progress in the case.
This incident has renewed concerns about women’s safety in the region and the effectiveness of police response to harassment and cybercrime.
