Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has drawn attention during his visit to Germany, alleging a “full-scale assault” on India’s institutional framework and reiterating concerns over electoral processes. His remarks prompted a sharp response from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Key Points from Rahul Gandhi’s Speech
Speaking at the Hertie School in Berlin on Monday, Gandhi addressed concerns about the integrity of Indian elections, pointing to duplicate voters in the voter lists. He alleged that the Congress party won the 2024 Haryana assembly elections, and questioned the fairness of the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections.
Gandhi also criticized the central government’s handling of institutions, stating:
“Our intelligence agencies, ED, and CBI have been weaponized. Most political cases target those who oppose the ruling party, while BJP affiliates face none. Institutional frameworks are being used as tools for political power.”
He emphasized that India hosts diverse perspectives and that millions of people support a vision of the country different from that of the current government and its ideological affiliates.
Election Integrity Concerns
Gandhi stressed that the Opposition has raised direct questions with the Election Commission, but did not receive satisfactory responses. He framed the debate as a clash of two visions for India, arguing that the ruling party’s approach could create social tensions if unchecked.
BJP Responds
BJP leaders sharply criticized Gandhi’s statements. Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje referred to him as “still a child” in his approach to leadership and questioned his intentions while speaking abroad.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused Gandhi of promoting unrest and wrote on social media:
“Rahul Gandhi in Germany says he thinks people will fight each other, India will fail, unrest will happen. This is part of a broader ideological agenda against national progress.”
Context
Rahul Gandhi is on a five-day visit to Germany, engaging with think tanks and foreign audiences. The trip has coincided with heightened domestic political debates in India, particularly around governance, institutional independence, and minority representation.
