The Government of India has strengthened its energy supply strategy by securing over 62,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) this week, ensuring continued fuel availability for millions of households despite ongoing disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.
Officials confirmed that two LPG cargo vessels have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, and are expected to support domestic supply needs.
LPG Supply Maintained Despite Global Disruptions
India, which imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements—with a majority sourced from West Asia, particularly Qatar—has faced supply challenges due to regional tensions.
To address this, state-run oil marketing companies are sourcing crude oil, LPG, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from multiple global suppliers. Authorities confirmed that domestic LPG supply for household consumption remains stable.
Currently, around 50 lakh LPG cylinders are being distributed daily, with no reported shortages across distributorships.
Priority to Domestic Consumers
The government has prioritised LPG supply for household use. Over the past five weeks, approximately 18 crore households have received LPG cylinders.
Commercial LPG supply, including to hotels and restaurants, remains restricted to ensure adequate availability for domestic users.
Digital Push Improves Delivery Efficiency
Officials highlighted a significant shift toward digital services:
- 97% of LPG refill bookings are now online
- 90% of deliveries use Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)
These measures aim to improve transparency and prevent diversion of LPG cylinders.
Fertiliser Sector Gets Increased Gas Allocation
In a parallel move, the government has increased gas allocation to the fertiliser sector from around 70% to 90%, using domestically produced natural gas.
Natural gas plays a critical role as both fuel and feedstock in fertiliser production, and this step is expected to support agricultural output and ensure supply stability.
Strengthening Domestic Production
Following the escalation of geopolitical tensions, India has directed refiners and petrochemical plants to maximise LPG output. This has resulted in a 40% increase in domestic LPG production, helping offset import disruptions.
Alternative Supply Channels Activated
Authorities have also secured additional LPG cargo shipments and ensured smooth transit through key maritime routes. Monitoring mechanisms are in place to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
Availability of Small Cylinders
The government confirmed sufficient availability of 5 kg free trade LPG cylinders, commonly used by students and migrant workers. These can be purchased with valid identification, without requiring address proof.
