India Issues Travel Advisory for Vietnam’s Phu Quoc: Key Visa Rules and Passport Risks Explained

The Embassy of India in Vietnam has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals planning to visit Phu Quoc Island, highlighting important visa restrictions and potential risks related to passport loss.

The advisory aims to help travellers avoid complications during their stay and ensure smoother travel experiences.

Visa-Free Entry Comes With Strict Limits

Phu Quoc Island has become a popular destination among Indian travellers due to its visa-free entry policy. However, authorities have clarified that this exemption applies only to the island.

Travellers entering Vietnam under this scheme are not permitted to visit mainland destinations such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City without a valid Vietnamese visa.

Why Travellers Are Advised to Get a Visa

The advisory warns that unexpected situations—such as medical emergencies or flight disruptions—may require travellers to leave the island.

In such cases, individuals without a valid visa for mainland Vietnam may face:

  • Travel restrictions
  • Delays in accessing medical services
  • Immigration-related complications

To avoid such issues, the Embassy recommends obtaining a valid Vietnamese visa before travelling, even if the itinerary is limited to Phu Quoc.

Passport Loss Could Delay Return

The advisory also highlights concerns related to passport loss during travel.

If a passport is lost, travellers must:

  1. File a police complaint at the nearest station
  2. Submit the report to Indian authorities in Vietnam

Emergency travel documents can be issued quickly, often on the same day. However, travellers must still obtain an exit permit from Vietnamese authorities.

This process typically takes three to five working days, and travellers must remain in Vietnam until the clearance is granted.

What Travellers Should Keep in Mind

  • Visa-free entry applies only to Phu Quoc Island
  • Mainland travel requires a valid visa
  • Always carry passport copies and secure documents
  • Be prepared for delays in case of emergencies
