Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has been chosen as India’s official submission for the Oscars 2026. The film, starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, was selected over a competitive list of notable releases including Pushpa 2, The Bengal Files, I Want to Talk, Tanvi The Great, and Kesari Chapter 2.

Competition for the Oscar Slot

Homebound emerged victorious against several high-profile contenders. The shortlist of films included:

  • Abhishek Bachchan’s I Want to Talk

  • Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great

  • Mithun Chakraborty’s The Bengal Files

  • Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2

  • Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2

  • Superboys of Malegaon, Sthal, Kannappa, Meta The Dazzling Girl, Sambar Bonda, Dashavatar, Vanvaas, Paani, Gandhi Tatha Chettu, Aata Thambaycha Naay, Kubera, Boong, Sankranthiki Vasthunnam, Humans in the Loop, Jugnuma, Phule, Veera Chandrahasa, and Pyre.

Plot and Release Details

Homebound revolves around two childhood friends from a small North Indian village who aspire to join the police force, a profession that promises them the dignity long denied. As they pursue their dream, mounting challenges and desperation test their friendship and resolve. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on September 26, 2025. A shortlist for the Oscars will be announced on December 16, 2025.

Reactions from Cast and Crew

Ishaan Khatter expressed his excitement on Instagram, stating, “This is the film I’ve been proudest of… Only you could make such an Indian film at its heart with a universal language.” He also praised filmmaker Karan Johar for supporting the project and executive producer Martin Scorsese for his role in the film’s creative journey.

Khatter further hailed his co-stars Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa for their dedication, while both actors shared their joy and appreciation on social media following the announcement.

Significance of the Selection

Homebound’s selection underscores the growing global recognition of Indian cinema’s ability to tell culturally rich yet universally relatable stories. The film’s exploration of ambition, friendship, and societal dignity resonates beyond India, giving it a strong platform at the Oscars.
