The sacred construction of chariots for the world-renowned Puri Rath Yatra has reached a significant milestone on its 40th day.
A dedicated team of 206 artisans, including carpenters, blacksmiths, and sculptors, has successfully fitted 44 yokes across the three iconic chariots—Taladhwaja, Darpadalana, and Nandighosa.
This intricate process, essential for securing the chariots’ structural integrity, marks steady progress toward the grand festival.
A major achievement was the completion of the first floor frames for all three chariots, a complex structure involving 6 crossbeams, 4 pillars, 24 side supports, 16 braces, and 24 base pillars. This framework, meticulously numbered for assembly, forms the foundation for the chariots’ towering structures. Under the supervision of chief carpenters and assistants, the process reflects centuries-old craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Sculptors have also begun intricate carvings, adorning the chariots’ doorposts with celestial figures like Gandharvas and Rahu, adding spiritual and aesthetic significance. Meanwhile, blacksmiths at the temporary forge in Dolabedi continue crafting iron pegs and brackets essential for the chariots’ base and upper tiers.
With 32 ceramic components already shaped and 44 yokes secured, the construction adheres to traditional methods while meeting modern safety standards. As the festival approaches, the artisans’ dedication ensures the chariots will be ready to carry Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra in a spectacle that draws millions.
The Rath Yatra, a symbol of Odisha’s cultural and spiritual heritage, continues to inspire awe, with preparations reflecting both devotion and precision. The coming weeks will see further progress as the gigantic chariots take shape, promising another unforgettable celebration.
