The Global Forecast System (GFS) has projected the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal during the second week of May 2026.
According to the long-range weather model, a cyclonic circulation is expected to develop between May 11 and May 15, with the potential for further intensification into a cyclonic storm.
While the system is being closely observed by meteorologists, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet issued an official forecast confirming the development or trajectory of any such system.
Weather experts emphasize that long-range model predictions are subject to change, and a clearer picture of the system’s path and intensity will emerge in the coming days.
State Readiness and Mitigation
In response to the early projections, the Odisha state administration has taken a proactive stance on disaster readiness. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari assured the public that the government is fully prepared to handle any natural calamities, including potential cyclones or floods during the pre-monsoon period.
