Police submitted a massive 30,000-page chargesheet in the sensational murder case of BJP leader and lawyer Pitabas Panda at the SDJM Court in Berhampur today.
The chargesheet, sealed in two tin boxes under tight security, marks one of the largest ever filed in Odisha’s judicial history.
Pitabas Panda was shot dead at close range on October 6, 2025, around 10 pm on the main road of Baikunth Nagar while returning home on his scooter after collecting a parcel from a hotel. According to the chargesheet, sharpshooter Kurupati Bhuyan approached Panda, greeted him, and then fired a shot that struck his chest. Panda collapsed along with his scooter. Kurupati attempted a second shot, but the bullet misfired. He and accomplice Chintu Pradhan fled the scene on a bike through Gokarneshwar temple road towards Shitalapalli.
Police have named 16 accused in the case, including former Berhampur MLA Bikram Panda, former Mayor Shib Shankar Das, BJD corporator Malay Bishoyi, BJD leader Madan Dalai, sharpshooter Kurupati Bhuyan, bike rider Chintu Pradhan, Sunya Das, and Yogi Raut, among others. All 16 have been arrested and remain in judicial custody. Their bail applications were rejected by the court.
Earlier, on December 9, 2025, police had submitted the case diary and CD file. Today’s chargesheet, running over 30,000 pages, is considered unprecedented in Berhampur and Odisha’s legal history.
