In a dramatic escape that has left Malkangiri police red-faced, a man accused in a ganja smuggling case slipped away from their custody right under their noses during a routine medical check-up.
Biswanath Madkami of Sindhrimal village was first arrested by the Excise Department in 2020 for his alleged involvement in ganja trafficking. He was produced in court, granted bail, and returned home. However, he repeatedly ignored court notices to appear, prompting the court to issue a warrant against him for contempt.

Acting on the warrant, police recently re-arrested Madkami. Spotting injury marks on his body, they decided to take him to a medical facility for examination. But in a major lapse, the accused managed to flee the premises before any check could be conducted. By the time the police reacted, Madkami had already disappeared.
Police have now launched a manhunt across the district and have urged his family members to immediately produce him before the authorities.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about basic security protocols when escorting accused persons.
