Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a ceremonial reception for Lee Jae Myung at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, marking the beginning of the South Korean leader’s official state visit to India.

The ceremony was also attended by Droupadi Murmu, who formally welcomed President Lee. He was accompanied by First Lady Kim Hea Kyung, highlighting the significance of the diplomatic engagement.

Visit Marks First South Korean Presidential Trip in Over Eight Years

President Lee’s three-day visit is notable as it marks the first visit by a South Korean head of state to India in more than eight years. Upon arrival in New Delhi, he engaged with members of the Korean community and emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

He described the upcoming India–South Korea summit as a potential turning point that could elevate ties to a new level.

Rajghat Visit and Diplomatic Engagements Scheduled

Following the ceremonial welcome, President Lee is scheduled to visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

The visit reflects a blend of diplomatic protocol and symbolic gestures, reinforcing shared values between the two nations.

Focus on Trade, Technology, and Strategic Cooperation

The central highlight of the visit will be bilateral talks between President Lee and Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as semiconductors, defence manufacturing, and green energy.

Both sides are also likely to review progress under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to enhance trade and economic collaboration.

India’s Growing Role in Global Supply Chains Highlighted

President Lee acknowledged India’s rising global influence, noting that the country has evolved into a key player in global production and supply chains. His remarks underscore South Korea’s interest in deepening partnerships in South Asia.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit represents an important milestone in strengthening the “India–South Korea Special Strategic Partnership.”

Business Forum and High-Level Meetings Planned

As part of his itinerary, President Lee will participate in a business forum at Bharat Mandapam, engaging with industry leaders to explore investment opportunities.

He is also scheduled to meet President Murmu later during the visit, further reinforcing diplomatic and economic ties.

Strengthening a Decade-Long Strategic Partnership

India and South Korea elevated their relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership in 2015. Since then, cooperation has expanded across sectors including infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, and innovation.

This visit is expected to build on that foundation and chart a forward-looking roadmap for collaboration.
