Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday. The state-of-the-art airport, built at a cost of around ₹19,650 crore, is set to significantly boost air connectivity, ease congestion in Mumbai, and strengthen India’s position in global aviation.

A Major Boost to Infrastructure

During his visit, PM Modi also launched the final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line-3 and introduced “Mumbai One”, India’s first integrated common mobility app that brings together 11 public transport operators under one platform.

The Prime Minister took a visual tour of the newly constructed airport, appreciating its design, technology, and passenger-friendly infrastructure.

About Navi Mumbai International Airport

The initial phase of NMIA features a single integrated terminal that will serve both domestic and international flights.
In the final phase, the airport will expand to four terminals and include two Code F compliant parallel runways — each measuring 3,700 meters in length and 60 meters in width.

  • Initial Passenger Capacity: 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA)

  • Initial Cargo Capacity: 0.5 million metric tonnes annually (MMTPA)

  • IATA/ICAO Code: NMI/VANM

Industry Reactions

Global airline association IATA praised the project, stating that NMIA will “ease capacity constraints in the Mumbai region, strengthen air connectivity, and bring significant economic and social benefits to India’s economy.”

Air India also congratulated the airport authorities on social media, posting:

“Every new runway brings Air India one step closer to connecting all of India to the world. Mumbai’s second airport reflects India’s rise in global aviation and its aspirations.”

Symbol of India’s Growth

The Navi Mumbai International Airport represents India’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, innovation, and economic growth. With the launch of Phase 1, Mumbai is set to emerge as one of the world’s most connected cities, supporting both domestic and international travel demand.
