PM Modi Calls India, US “Natural Partners” Amid Renewed Trade Talks With Trump

In a major development aimed at easing recent trade tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed optimism about ongoing trade talks between India and the United States.

The Prime Minister assured that teams from both nations were working to conclude negotiations at the earliest, potentially ending the cycle of tariff escalations initiated by Washington.

PM Modi’s Statement on Trade Talks
Replying to US President Donald Trump’s post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties:

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest.”

PM Modi also confirmed that he was looking forward to a direct conversation with President Trump in the coming weeks to further align both nations’ economic and strategic priorities.

Trump Welcomes Dialogue
Shortly after PM Modi’s remarks, President Trump reposted the message on his Truth Social platform, signalling a possible thaw in relations. Trump described Modi as a “very good friend” and expressed confidence that the talks would end in a “successful conclusion” beneficial to both nations.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump had publicly announced the resumption of trade negotiations, saying,

“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two nations.”

Backdrop of Recent Trade Tensions
The renewed engagement comes after a period of friction, during which New Delhi reportedly expressed frustration over what it called Washington’s “unjustified” punitive tariffs.

Last month, the US administration doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duty on Indian imports of Russian crude oil. Reports had also suggested that PM Modi had avoided President Trump’s calls at least four times due to growing irritation over the tariffs.

US Contradictions on Trade Policy
While the US has reopened trade talks with India, Trump has simultaneously urged the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on nations like India and China for continuing to purchase Russian crude. This dual approach highlights Washington’s attempt to balance its foreign policy objectives — penalising Russian oil buyers while keeping India engaged in broader strategic cooperation.

A Path Toward Resolution
Despite the tensions, both leaders appear keen to mend ties and restore momentum to India-US economic relations. PM Modi’s remarks about a “brighter, more prosperous future” and Trump’s assurance that there is “nothing to worry about” signal a mutual willingness to overcome differences and strengthen what both sides have consistently described as a “special relationship.”
