Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have instructed their respective officials to accelerate negotiations on a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement, marking a significant step toward strengthening economic ties between India and the United States.
The decision emerged during a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, where both sides emphasized the need for greater certainty and stability in trade relations.
Speaking to reporters in Paris, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that trade was among the key issues discussed during the Modi-Trump meeting.
“Both leaders directed their officials to move forward with discussions on the bilateral trade agreement as quickly as possible,” Misri said. He also revealed that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India next week for further negotiations with India’s Commerce Minister.
Trade Deal Seen as Priority
The proposed India-US trade agreement has gained urgency after months of uncertainty surrounding tariffs, market access, and trade regulations. Negotiations have continued since both countries announced a framework for the deal in February 2025, but several issues have slowed progress.
According to Misri, the agreement is crucial for creating predictability in commercial relations between the world’s two largest democracies.
“The objective is to move toward greater certainty in trade-related matters,” he said.
Modi-Trump Meeting Signals Diplomatic Reset
The meeting was also viewed as an important effort to reinforce bilateral ties following a challenging period in the relationship. Trade tensions intensified last year after the United States imposed steep tariffs on several Indian exports, creating concerns among businesses and policymakers on both sides.
Despite those challenges, officials described the latest interaction between Modi and Trump as positive and constructive.
The two leaders had not met for more than a year, with Modi’s last visit to Washington taking place in February 2025 and no subsequent visit to India by Trump.
India Ready to Support West Asia Peace Efforts
During the briefing, Misri also addressed developments in West Asia following the recently announced understanding between the United States and Iran.
India welcomed efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region and reiterated its willingness to engage with all stakeholders to promote lasting peace and stability.
Misri said India maintains strong relationships across the region and stands ready to contribute wherever possible as diplomatic efforts move forward.
Growing Strategic Importance
The renewed push for a trade agreement highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States. A successful deal could enhance market access, boost investments, strengthen supply chains, and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
With fresh negotiations set to begin next week, policymakers and industry leaders will closely watch whether both sides can overcome longstanding differences and move closer to a comprehensive trade pact.
