A first-year PhD student of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Jatni, Khordha district, was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside her hostel room on Monday.
The deceased student, identified as Shreya Singh from Uttar Pradesh, stayed in the institute’s hostel. Fellow students discovered her unconscious on her bed and alerted hostel authorities when she did not wake up for hours.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and recovered the body. Officials shifted Shreya to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for post-mortem examination. Investigators began probing the case to determine the exact cause of death.
Sources said police are examining all possible angles, including health issues and personal distress. Officers collected statements from hostel residents and secured the room for forensic analysis.
The incident shocked the NISER campus community. Students expressed grief and demanded a transparent investigation. Authorities assured full cooperation with the police inquiry.
