Bengaluru: The opposition alliance is to be named INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said.

“We have come together to save Democracy and the Constitution. With one voice, we have agreed to have a name for the alliance. The name is –

I   – Indian, N – National, D – Developmental, I   – Inclusive, A – Alliance

11-member coordination committee shall be set up shortly. We are going to meet again in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Date of the meeting shall be announced later. A secretariat shall be set up for campaign management in Delhi and other committees for specific purposes shall be set-up.

A joint statement of the meeting has been approved today. BJP Govt wants to destroy Democracy in this country. They want to bulldoze the Constitution. Unemployment and Price Rise is at its peak. They are misusing autonomous institutions against the opposition. It is a grave situation.

We will fight this unitedly, and we shall be successful”, Kharge tweeted.

Top leaders of 26 opposition parties are meeting here to discuss a united strategy to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Indicating that such a name is being considered, Congress Lok Sabha MP Manickam Tagore said on Twitter, “INDIA will win.” “Chak De! INDIA,” tweeted Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien even as the meeting was underway.

To be sure, there was no official confirmation of the naming even as the name for the grouping was deliberated on Monday in informal discussions ahead of the meeting of the leaders of 26 opposition parties on Tuesday to discuss concrete measures for their unity in Bengaluru.

People aware of the matter said former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray first mooted a name for the grouping. At the first meeting of the grouping in Patna last month, he said they should not be called mere Opposition parties. He argued they have a constructive agenda and are patriotic and democratic in nature.

In his address at the meeting in Bengaluru on Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his party is not interested in the Prime Minister’s post but in protecting the idea of India, the Constitution, secularism, and democracy. Kharge said there are differences among them at the state level. He added the differences can be put aside for the sake of protecting the people.
