On Odia New Year Day 'Balasore Darshan' Begins It's Heritage Journey

On the auspicious occasion of Pana Sankranti and the Odia New Year, the heritage initiative ‘Balasore Darshan’ was formally inaugurated, marking a significant step in reconnecting the people of Balasore with their own rich and layered cultural heritage.

Spearheaded by local citizens and cultural volunteers, ‘Balasore Darshan’ is envisioned as a weekend heritage trail that aims to bring into public focus the tangible and intangible heritage of Balasore — spanning over five centuries of socio-cultural evolution. The initiative is committed to fostering awareness, encouraging documentation, and promoting sustainable preservation of historical sites and folk traditions in and around the district.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including renowned artist Keshu Das, cultural researcher and heritage activist Prashant Padhi, Govind Ballabh Dalai, founder-chairperson of Yuba Bikash, Founder member of Odisha Heritage Walks (OHW) Bishwaranjan Dehury, and Prashant Kumar Patel, founder of Jñānashri Social Organisation.

Addressing the gathering, artist Keshu Das emphasized that archaeological findings place Balasore’s origins as far back as the 4,000 years before Chirst, highlighting its deep-rooted identity as a thriving agrarian and cultural settlement long before colonial contact. He underscored the importance of reclaiming and preserving these civilizational narratives before they are lost to time.

The speakers collectively stressed the need for community-led heritage consciousness, highlighting sites such as ancient Kupari (once known as Kumparakathu), the Triveni-like confluence of Budhabalanga, Sona, and Gangahar rivers in Ayodhya (Oudha), as well as Balasore’s cultural links to Kosambi, Santiniketan, and the British colonial administration. Traditional practices such as folk arts, oral literature, local food systems, and rituals also found their due recognition as critical threads in the cultural fabric of the region.

The heritage walk began with floral tributes to Byasakabi Fakir Mohan Senapati, a pioneer of modern Odia literature, followed by a guided trail from Santikanan to Barabati High School, erstwhile Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where the freedom fighter Bagha Jatin had spent his final days. The trail continued to Balighat, the British Cemetery, Mirzapokhari, and concluded at Niliabag Palace — each site offering a unique glimpse into Balasore’s colonial and cultural memory.

Organized by Yuba Bikash under the leadership of Govind Ballabh Dalai, the event was made possible through the collaboration of local youth contributors including Sambit Khuntia, Rakhal Maity, Lakshmipriya Marandi, Asit Dalai, Ashok Das, and others who have committed themselves to the cause of heritage awareness.

“This initiative is more than a walk — it is a movement to reclaim our identity, to tell our stories, and to pass them on with pride,” said Govind Ballabh Dalai. The organizers shared their long-term vision of creating a documented heritage network of Balasore, developing it into a destination of national and international cultural significance.

In a time when modern transitions often overshadow local memory, ‘Balasore Darshan’ stands as a collective endeavor to honor, preserve, and promote the invaluable legacy of Odisha’s historical and cultural wealth — for today’s generation and those to come.
