In a milestone for Indian para sports, Odisha’s star athlete Suchitra Parida, the national record holder in Women’s Javelin Throw (F-55/56 category), has been named to represent India at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025.

The event, marking India’s first-ever hosting of this prestigious competition, kicks off tomorrow evening at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi and runs through October 5.

Over 1,700 athletes from more than 100 countries will converge for 186 medal events, showcasing the pinnacle of para athletic excellence. Suchitra’s inclusion in Team India underscores her remarkable journey of dedication and resilience, turning personal challenges into national inspiration. Her consistent national-level triumphs have positioned her as a beacon for aspiring para athletes across the country.

The championships represent not just a sporting spectacle but a historic leap for India on the global stage. For Odisha, the pride runs even deeper: 12 National Technical Officials (NTOs) from the state have been appointed to ensure the event’s seamless execution. Their roles in officiating and operations highlight Odisha’s growing stature in para sports infrastructure and talent development.

Sunil Pradhan, Secretary of the Para Sports Association of Odisha, expressed elation over the dual representation. “Suchitra Parida’s selection is a matter of immense pride for Odisha. The presence of our 12 National Technical Officials at the World Championships shows the strong foundation we have built in para sports. Odisha is not only playing a vital role in India’s para sports journey today but is also working towards future growth with a vision to make the state a powerhouse of para athletics in the country.”

The officials from Odisha include: Debamrut Sahu, Rashmiranjan Malik, Priyaranjan Nayak, Lakshmidhar Mahanti, Gopal Soni, Sobharani Dora, Patrapushpa Mahanti, Lipasa Mishra, Ronali Sahu, Puja Behera, Malabika Mishra, and Sarita Sahu.

As the championships unfold, all eyes will be on Suchitra’s javelin throws and Odisha’s behind-the-scenes heroes, proving once again that the eastern state is a force to reckon with in India’s para sports renaissance.
