The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent multi-district weather warning for Odisha. A volatile mix of severe heatwaves, intense thunderstorms, and suffocating humidity is set to impact the state over the next seven days.

With alerts ranging from Red to Yellow, local authorities are urging residents to take immediate precautions to ensure community safety.

Severe Heatwave: Red Warning Issued for Vulnerable Districts

The IMD has placed Boudh and Bolangir districts under a Red Warning for Day 1 due to extreme, life-threatening heatwave conditions. A Red Warning represents the highest level of weather alert, signaling a critical risk to public health.

While everyone is at risk during extreme heat, these conditions are particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups. Children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and people with pre-existing health conditions need to take extra care.

From Day 2 to Day 3, both Boudh and Bolangir will transition to an Orange Warning, as scorching temperatures continue to hover significantly above normal. Extended exposure to this extreme heat can cause severe dehydration, heat cramps, exhaustion, and heatstroke.

Double Trouble: Orange Warning for Violent Thunderstorms

In a stark contrast of elements, northern, central, and coastal Odisha are bracing for severe thunderstorms. The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for lightning and gusty winds reaching destructive speeds of 50–60 kmph.

Day 1: Afternoon and Evening Storms

Heavy thunderstorms and lightning are expected to strike the following districts during the afternoon and evening hours:

  • Angul & Dhenkanal
  • Sundargarh, Keonjhar, & Mayurbhanj
  • Ganjam & Gajapati

Simultaneously, Nuapada and Kalahandi will face intense heatwave conditions under an Orange Warning.

Day 4 & Day 5: Storm Activity Intensifies

By Day 4, the stormy weather system is expected to strengthen, bringing fierce winds and lightning risks to a wider area:

Day 4 Thunderstorm Alert Zone

Day 5 Thunderstorm Alert Zone

Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur

Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj

Property & Crop Alert: Experts warn that these strong winds could cause localized power outages and damage fragile ecosystems, standing paddy, and banana plantations.

Coastal Discomfort: Yellow Warning for Hot and Humid Conditions

A widespread Yellow Warning covers the remaining interior and coastal belts of Odisha. Coastal communities are facing a challenging combination of high temperatures and extreme humidity, which makes the air feel much hotter than it actually is.

Districts such as Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Balasore, and Ganjam will experience these uncomfortable, sticky conditions. Furthermore, Bolangir and Sambalpur will endure “warm night conditions,” where elevated nighttime temperatures offer little to no relief from the daytime heat.

Fortunately, light to moderate rainfall is expected to develop from Day 4 onward across northern and coastal areas. While these rain-bearing clouds may provide temporary relief from the blistering heat, they will likely cause humidity levels to spike.

How to Stay Safe: Essential IMD Guidelines

Local authorities are working to support affected communities, urging everyone to share these safety measures with family, friends, and neighbors.

Heatwave Protection

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Enjoy hydrating fluids like ORS, lemon water, and buttermilk.
  • Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid going outdoors during the peak heat hours of 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored cotton clothing, and always use an umbrella or hat when outside.
  • Protect Workers: Schedule demanding physical labor during the cooler early morning or late evening hours.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Safety

  • Seek Shelter Immediately: If you hear thunder, move indoors. Never take shelter under trees or near isolated structures.
  • Unplug Electronics: Disconnect household electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges.
  • Stay Clear of Danger: Keep away from electric poles, metal structures, and open bodies of water during a storm.
