Odisha dense fog advisory

In response to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) warning of dense fog, the Commerce and Transport Department of Odisha has issued detailed guidelines to Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in six districts at risk, directing them to take proactive measures to prevent road accidents.

The affected districts — Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Sambalpur — are likely to experience reduced visibility due to dense fog, particularly during early morning and late evening hours.

Under the instructions of Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena and with direct supervision from Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, the department has emphasised widespread awareness campaigns and strict enforcement.

A virtual meeting was held with senior officials of the State Transport Authority, Deputy Transport Commissioners, and RTOs to ensure effective implementation.

The advisory includes comprehensive safety tips for road users:
  • Drive at slow speeds according to visibility conditions.
  • Use low-beam headlights.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
  • Keep parking lights and tail lights on properly.
  • Exercise extra caution on ghats and curves.
  • If visibility is very low, avoid driving and park in a safe location.
Drivers are strictly advised against:
  • Using high-beam lights.
  • Overtaking in fog.
  • Sudden braking.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or when fatigued.
  • Parking vehicles in the middle of the road.

For commercial vehicles, the guidelines stress the use of proper headlights, brake lights, and reflectors; appointing experienced drivers; avoiding unnecessary early morning travel; and refraining from journeys unless absolutely essential during dense fog.

The department has urged all road users to prioritise safety, stating that unnecessary travel in dense fog should be avoided to minimise risks.
