The Odisha government is set to introduce Poshan Kendras, modeled after Gujarat’s successful initiative, to provide essential commodities at subsidized rates. The announcement was made by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Sunday.
These centers will cater to both economically weaker sections and middle-class families, offering essential items like rice, pulses, flour, and cooking oil at reduced prices. The initiative will be jointly subsidized by the Central and Odisha governments to ensure affordability.
Pilot Project & Expansion Plans
As part of the initial phase, 35 Poshan Kendras will be established. If the pilot proves successful, the government aims to extend the initiative to every panchayat across the state.
To ensure effective implementation, a team of officials will visit Gujarat to study its operational model and gather insights. Minister Patra stated that the government will finalize policies and make a conclusive decision regarding the statewide rollout soon.
Meanwhile, the distribution of ration and essential supplies will continue with support from both the state and central governments, ensuring food security for citizens.
