Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has declared that the state is on track to become the epicentre of India’s steel industry.

Speaking at the ‘Steel India 2025’ conference, jointly organised by the Ministry of Steel and FICCI, Majhi emphasised Odisha’s robust investment environment and rapid economic rise.

“Odisha will soon emerge as the leader in the steel sector. We’re already among the top five fastest-growing states and are establishing ourselves as a major economic force,” he told reporters. Majhi echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Odisha as a key growth engine in the journey towards a developed India by 2047.

Majhi highlighted steel as the backbone of Odisha’s economy, citing the state’s impressive output of over 41 million tonnes annually. With an ambitious target of producing 130 million tonnes by 2030, Odisha aims to contribute nearly half of India’s total steel production.

Massive Investments and Jobs on the Horizon
The Chief Minister pointed to the Rs 17 lakh crore worth of investment proposals received during the Utkarsh Odisha business conclave in January, much of which is earmarked for the steel sector. These investments are projected to create 9 lakh (900,000) new jobs in the state.

Majhi credited the “double-engine sarkar” — the combined efforts of the state and central governments — for enabling this industrial momentum. He also highlighted improvements in infrastructure, including road, rail, and port networks, as critical to supporting this growth.

“We’ve launched a new industrial policy with simplified, transparent financial incentives, making Odisha a more attractive destination than competing states,” he concluded.
