The Cyber Police Station in Bhubaneswar has arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh for his alleged involvement in a Rs 98 lakh cyber fraud case.
The accused was apprehended from Bijnor district on 10 September and brought to Bhubaneswar after being produced before a local court.
The arrest follows a complaint filed on 4 July by a city resident who claimed he was duped after joining a WhatsApp group through a link received in June. The group promised high returns on investments, luring victims into a sophisticated scam.
According to Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena, the accused operated alongside others using fake websites and digital platforms to trap unsuspecting investors. During the investigation, police recovered Rs 30 lakh in cash, three mobile phones, and four SIM cards. Two fraudulent websites used in the scam were also taken down.
The case highlights growing concerns over digital financial fraud and the need for public awareness around online investment schemes. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the racket and trace remaining funds.
