Odisha’s Urban Development Department has announced a plan to treat and reuse drain water for agriculture, firefighting, and industrial purposes.
The initiative aims to tackle water scarcity and promote sustainable resource management across urban areas.
Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra said the department will purify contaminated water from city drains and reuse it for non-potable applications. He emphasised that the project will help conserve freshwater resources while supporting essential services.
The treated water will serve multiple sectors, including irrigation for urban farming, industrial cooling, and firefighting operations. The department also plans to restore and beautify city ponds and water bodies to improve urban aesthetics and groundwater recharge.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the state’s broader environmental goals and reflects Odisha’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The project will involve modern water treatment systems to ensure safety and efficiency.
Mahapatra highlighted that the reuse of drain water will reduce dependency on conventional sources and help cities manage water stress effectively. The department will soon identify pilot locations for implementation.
