The Odisha Legislative Assembly paid homage to legendary freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai on his 142nd death anniversary. Leaders and dignitaries gathered at the Assembly premises in Bhubaneswar to honour his memory.
Born on January 23, 1809, in Khinda village near Sambalpur, Surendra Sai belonged to the Chauhan royal family. He ignited the flame of resistance against British rule in Western Odisha in 1827. His mission focused on liberating Sambalpur from colonial control. Through guerrilla warfare, strategic planning, courage, and resilience, he challenged the British forces and became a symbol of Odisha’s revolutionary spirit.
The Assembly event witnessed Speaker Surama Padhy, Chief Whip Saroj Pradhan, Congress leader Rama Chandra Kadam, MLA Dusmanta Swain, former minister Arabinda Dhali, Utkal Sammilani members, and Assembly Secretary Satyabrata Rout offering floral tributes at Sai’s statue.
The program included patriotic songs performed by the Saswati Social and Cultural Organisation. Public Relations Officer Anshuman Sahu coordinated the proceedings.
