A fresh controversy has erupted over the gang-rape of an Odisha medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal, after Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi alleged that the main accused remains at large, even as the investigation continues.

MP Raises Questions on Law and Order in West Bengal

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, MP Sarangi expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal.
He alleged that the state has become a hub for anti-social and extremist activities, demanding urgent steps to restore safety and public confidence.

“West Bengal has now become a safe haven for terrorists and anti-social elements. The government seems to be promoting such activities. While three persons have been arrested, the main accused is still at large,” Sarangi said.

The MP also visited the crime scene in Durgapur to assess the situation firsthand and urged authorities to expedite the arrest of the absconding suspect.

Incident Overview

The heinous crime reportedly occurred late Friday night near a forested stretch behind a private medical college in Shobhapur, Durgapur.

Preliminary findings suggest that the survivor, a second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar in Balasore district, had stepped out of the campus with a male friend to get food when a group of 4–5 men allegedly followed them.

The assailants attacked the pair, dragged the girl away, and committed the assault before fleeing the spot.

Investigation and Arrests

So far, three accused have been arrested, while two others remain absconding more than 36 hours after the crime.
The West Bengal Police have intensified search operations and are verifying CCTV footage and local witness accounts.

Meanwhile, Odisha Women’s Commission and Balasore district authorities have extended full support to the survivor’s family, coordinating with West Bengal officials to ensure proper medical and legal assistance.

Public Outrage and Demand for Justice

The brutal assault has triggered widespread outrage in both Odisha and West Bengal, with citizens and political leaders demanding swift justice for the survivor.
Women’s rights groups have also called for stronger campus security and stricter legal measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
