The state government has taken a major step forward in its mission to turn Odisha’s youth into globally competitive professionals by fast-tracking land acquisition for two ambitious new World Skill Centers in Berhampur and Sambalpur.
Announced with a substantial outlay of ₹278 crore in the 2026-27 state budget, the twin centres are set to deliver world-class, industry-aligned training that matches international standards.
The Skill Development and Technical Education Department has now completed the land identification process and begun the administrative groundwork for smooth transfer of the identified plots.
For the Berhampur centre, a sprawling 40-acre site in Laudigaon mouza under Kanisi tahasil in Ganjam district has been finalised. After a detailed field visit by technical experts who inspected both Laudigaon and Sitalapalli, Laudigaon was selected as the ideal location. Its large contiguous land parcel, strategic proximity to IISER Berhampur, and closeness to the sea coast make it perfect for launching high-demand courses such as Marine Engineering and Hospitality.
The department’s Additional Secretary has already directed the Berhampur District Skill Development and Employment Deputy Director to immediately submit the land alignment proposal to revenue authorities. This will enable quick transfer of the land in the name of the Skill Development and Technical Education Department.
In Sambalpur, nearly 15 acres of government land in Badasinhari mouza has been identified. Currently under the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, the plot will be transferred following fresh instructions issued to the Sambalpur District Collector. The local Deputy Director has been authorised to submit the separation proposal without delay.
These swift moves underline the state government’s clear intent: to equip thousands of young Odias with future-ready skills that open doors to high-paying jobs in India and abroad.
With specialised training infrastructure coming up in both coastal Berhampur and central Sambalpur, the initiative is expected to significantly boost employability and position Odisha as a rising skill-development hub in eastern India.
