A first-year B.Tech Computer Science student from Nepal was found dead in her hostel room at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar on Thursday evening, marking the second such incident involving a Nepali student in the past three months.
The deceased, identified as Prisha Saha from Birgunj, Nepal, was discovered in a girls’ hostel. Authorities suspect suicide, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh stated that hostel staff discovered the body when the student failed to respond during a routine attendance check at 7 PM. Upon entering the room, they found her hanging.
“No suicide note has been recovered so far. A scientific team has been deployed, and an unnatural death case has been registered,” said Singh, adding that the student’s friends are cooperating with the investigation.
The Odisha government extended condolences to Prisha’s family and assured full support. In a statement issued by the I&PR Department, the government said that senior officials, including the Police Commissioner and the Revenue Divisional Commissioner, were dispatched immediately to the site to look into the incident. A forensic team has also begun collecting evidence.
“The State Government stands with the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” the statement read.
Investigative teams are now working with university authorities to determine if any external factors contributed to the incident. The case has intensified scrutiny on campus safety protocols, particularly concerning international students.
