Affordable rental housing scheme

The government has unveiled a major relief plan for the urban poor and low-income groups. Under this initiative, the state will provide affordable rental homes to families struggling with high housing costs.

The Housing and Urban Development Department issued a directive to identify unused government houses and convert them into rental units. These homes will be renovated through public agencies and then allotted to poor families at subsidised rents.

Officials confirmed that working women will receive priority under the scheme. The plan will be implemented in line with Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0, ensuring affordable housing options through two distinct models.

In the first model, unused government houses will be refurbished and rented out. In the second model, private institutions and individuals will be encouraged to construct homes and offer them at affordable rents. This dual approach aims to increase the availability of low-cost rental housing in urban areas.

Experts believe the scheme will ease housing problems for thousands of families who work in cities but struggle with rising rents. The government’s move is expected to improve living conditions and reduce the burden on economically weaker sections.

Authorities will soon release detailed guidelines and application procedures. Once implemented, the scheme is expected to significantly reduce housing challenges in urban regions and provide much-needed stability for poor families.
