Odisha is experiencing a dramatic shift in weather patterns as Nor’Wester storms sweep across the state, bringing relief from intense summer heat.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across several districts, urging residents to remain cautious.
Over the past 24 hours, Sundargarh and Bargarh recorded the highest rainfall at 51.4mm, while moderate showers were reported in Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sambalpur, and Balasore.
The weather advisory warns that storm activity is expected to last until May 23, affecting both coastal and interior districts with sporadic downpours and gusty winds reaching 30-50 km/h.
Storm System Influencing Odisha’s Weather
Experts attribute this unstable weather pattern to a cyclonic circulation over Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, extending into central Punjab through a trough line that reaches northern Bangladesh. As a result, heavy rain showers are expected to intensify, particularly in western and coastal Odisha.
Yellow Warning Issued for 5 Heatwave-Affected Districts
Apart from thunderstorm alerts, the Met department has also extended heatwave warnings for Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati, citing high humidity levels and fluctuating temperatures.
The coming week will likely see widespread rainfall, with some regions experiencing intense downpours, disrupting daily life and agricultural activities.
Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather events, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow official updates from local authorities.
