A newborn lion cub at Nandankanan Zoological Park has died, reducing the facility’s lion population to 23.
Lioness Maya, experiencing her first pregnancy, delivered two cubs on September 7. The first cub was stillborn. The mother did not accept the second cub, prompting zoo authorities to separate it and provide hand-rearing care.
According to officials, the newborn failed to accept food and liquids properly, leading to its death.
Nandankanan currently houses 23 lions, comprising 17 Asiatic lions and six hybrid lions.
