The 100th birth anniversary of Bidyut Prabha Devi, a luminary in Odia literature, was commemorated with a grand state-level celebration at Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar.

Organised by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha, the event paid tribute to the poet’s enduring legacy in feminist and socialist poetry.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Chief Guest, lauded Bidyut Prabha Devi’s contributions, stating, “Her dedication to literature and feminist ideals continues to inspire generations. In the age of Artificial Intelligence, we must leverage technology to take Odia literature to global audiences.” He inaugurated a painting workshop showcasing her life through vibrant artworks, applauding the artists’ creative tribute.

Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Pratibha Ray, Guest of Honour, reflected, “Bidyut Prabha Devi’s poetry, steeped in feminism and socialism, resonates deeply with themes of love and pain.”

Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj emphasised her as a symbol of women’s strength, aligning her legacy with the vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047. Ekamra MLA Shri Babu Singh called her a “guiding light” for Odia literature, urging youth to draw inspiration from her ideals.

Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Bidyut Prabha Devi’s son and former Vice-Chancellor of Central University, Koraput, shared personal insights into her literary journey. The event featured the release of the book Bajiraout and the latest issue of Konark magazine by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi, alongside a panel discussion on her works.

Dr. Chandrasekhar Hota, Secretary of Odisha Sahitya Akademi, delivered the welcome address, while Prof. Chandi Charan Rath, Vice-Chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University, offered the vote of thanks.

The event saw participation from Bijaya Ketan Upadhyaya, Director of Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, university students, renowned writers, intellectuals, and social workers.

The celebration underscored Bidyut Prabha Devi’s timeless influence, reinforcing Odisha’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich literary heritage.
