Odisha continues to reel under severe heatwave conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that there will be no immediate relief from the blistering temperatures until at least May 26.

The Regional Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar has issued a yellow warning for 15 districts as temperatures are expected to rise further over the next few days.

Residents across western Odisha and coastal regions are struggling with extreme daytime heat, warm nights and rising humidity levels, making weather conditions increasingly uncomfortable.

Temperatures Likely To Rise Further Across Odisha

According to the weather department, temperatures could increase by another 2 degrees Celsius in several districts, worsening the ongoing summer conditions.

Manorama Mohanty said that heatwave conditions, warm nights and high humidity are expected to continue across Odisha for at least five more days.

The prolonged heat has disrupted daily life in many parts of the state, forcing people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours.

Jharsuguda Crosses 45 Degrees Celsius

The severity of the heatwave was reflected in Wednesday’s temperature readings across Odisha.

Jharsuguda recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in the state.

Apart from Jharsuguda:

  • Six cities recorded temperatures above 44°C
  • Twenty-two cities crossed the 40°C mark

The combination of extreme heat during the day and unusually warm nights has added to public discomfort across several districts.

What Is Causing Odisha’s Intense Heatwave?

Experts say the prolonged heatwave is being driven by a “heat dome” effect caused by a high-pressure weather system.

Environmentalist Jay Krushna Panigrahi explained that the high-pressure zone traps heat close to the earth’s surface, preventing cloud formation and reducing chances of rainfall.

As a result, solar radiation continues heating the land surface intensely, while trapped hot air keeps temperatures elevated for longer periods.

Health Advisory Issued Amid Extreme Heat

Authorities have advised people to:

  • Avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear light cotton clothing
  • Take extra care of children, elderly people and those with health conditions

With no rain forecast immediately, Odisha is expected to remain under severe summer stress for the next several days.
