The Odisha Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Tuesday as legislators debated the Anwesha Yojana, a scheme designed to support SC/ST students.

Congress legislators moved a motion to discuss the scheme and alleged that the government failed to deliver on its promises. Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam argued that the government betrayed tribal students in the 2025–26 financial year.

Kadam further claimed that the Anwesha portal remained closed and admissions did not take place. He added, “The Chief Minister and the concerned minister do not understand the pain of tribal communities. Children lack proper facilities for accommodation, food, and transport.”

In response, SC/ST Development Minister Nityananda Gond countered the allegations and highlighted the scheme’s achievements. He informed the House that:

  • 20,000 SC/ST students currently study under Anwesha Yojana.
  • These students enrolled in 163 educational institutions across 11 districts.
  • The government allocated Rs 158.08 crore for 2025–26 to support the scheme.
  • Officials are considering a proposal to continue the scheme for the next five years.

Gond emphasised that the government remains committed to tribal welfare and will ensure the scheme continues to provide opportunities for education and empowerment.
