Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly was adjourned twice until 4 PM on Tuesday by Speaker Surama Padhy, as members of the Opposition Congress and BJD created a commotion over various demands.
The session, resuming after a 19-day hiatus, began with a tribute to the late former MLA Sundar Mohan Majhi. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presented the obituary motion, supported by leaders from BJD, Congress, CPM, and the Speaker. The House observed a moment of silence for the late leader.
The disruption escalated during the Question Hour as Congress members demanded the reinstatement of student union elections, suspended for six years under the previous BJD government. Concurrently, BJD members protested against an alleged assault by the Odisha Governor’s son on a government official.
BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallick sought government action on this matter and the removal of remarks made by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling regarding the arrest of Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik.
She also requested details on the privilege notice against the Chief Minister for his announcement of reservations for Agniveers in state services.
