A second-grade student died inside Dharamsagar Government Upper Primary School in Komna block of Nuapada district during Children’s Day celebrations.
The boy, son of Jadumani Sabar and Bhanumati Sabar, collapsed while playing and fell to the ground. Family members rushed him to Komna Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead.
Komna police registered a case, seized the body, and handed it over to the family after the post‑mortem. District education authorities ordered an inquiry. Komna BEO Anita Panda, Additional BEO Radhakant Tandi, CRCC Kamalakant Das, and Ananta Pradhan visited the school. Later, District Education Officer Prashant Kumar Mahant inspected the premises and submitted a detailed report to the Collector.
Following the Collector’s directive, DEO Mahant suspended three teachers — Headmistress Bonita Harpal, Kalyani Majhi, and Muralimohan Majhi — for negligence leading to the student’s death. Authorities also issued show‑cause notices to three assistant teachers: Ahalya Sabar, Dagareswar Sahu, and Meenakshi Panda.
Parents and villagers expressed anger over the incident. They locked the school and staged a dharna demanding compensation for the family and suspension of all teachers. Local leaders, including Kishore Kumar Kathar, Harishchandra Majhi, and School Management Committee Chairman Gourang Rout, joined the protest along with students.
Additional Tahasildar Yogeshwar Sahu, BEO Anita Panda, Additional BEO Radhakant Tandi, and Komna police reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to withdraw the dharna.
