Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Noida International Airport on March 28, 2026, marking a transformative milestone in India’s aviation and infrastructure landscape.

The airport, located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is set to become the second international gateway for the Delhi-NCR region after Indira Gandhi International Airport, helping reduce congestion and significantly enhance passenger capacity.

Flights Every Two Minutes: A Vision for High-Capacity Aviation

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted the airport’s scale and future potential, stating that it will handle a flight every two minutes once fully operational. This ambitious capacity underscores India’s push toward becoming a global aviation hub.

He emphasized that the project will strengthen connectivity across northern India while positioning the region as a key transit and logistics center.

Boost for Uttar Pradesh’s Economy and Connectivity

The airport is expected to serve major cities such as Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Mathura, and Meerut. It will also improve access to important tourism and pilgrimage destinations, supporting both domestic and international travel.

PM Modi noted that the project will create new opportunities for:

  • Farmers
  • Small and medium enterprises
  • Youth and job seekers

The development aligns with India’s broader vision of inclusive growth and regional economic empowerment.

When Will Commercial Flights Begin?

According to officials, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted the aerodrome licence on March 6, 2026. Based on current timelines:

  • Domestic and cargo flights: Expected between April and May 2026
  • International flights: Likely to begin from September 2026

Integrated Aviation System to Ease NCR Congestion

The Noida airport will operate alongside Delhi’s IGI Airport as part of an integrated aviation network. This dual-airport system is expected to:

  • Reduce passenger load at IGI
  • Improve travel efficiency
  • Strengthen logistics and cargo movement

Government officials stated that this development will elevate Delhi-NCR’s status among leading global aviation hubs.

Infrastructure Growth Amid Global Challenges

Addressing the broader context, PM Modi highlighted the importance of resilience amid global uncertainties, including the ongoing West Asia crisis. He called for collective efforts from citizens to strengthen India’s economic and infrastructural capabilities.

He reiterated that infrastructure expansion remains central to India’s long-term growth strategy, with significant investments already made in highways, railways, and aviation
