The National Human Rights Commission intensified its investigation into the Balianta mob violence case that led to the death of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain.
On Wednesday, a two-member NHRC team recorded statements from the woman who filed the initial complaint and ambulance driver Sugyan Mallick of the 108 service.
Mallick told the panel that his team received a call at 11:06 a.m. reporting an accident at Ramchandrapur in Balianta. They reached the spot at 11:34 a.m. and contacted the caller, who informed them that the victim had already been taken away in a private vehicle. The ambulance team then returned to Adaspur Community Health Centre.
Both the complainant and the driver appeared before the NHRC after receiving notices. The Commission’s team, which arrived in Bhubaneswar on June 1, will continue its field investigation in Odisha until June 6.
The NHRC panel is examining the circumstances of the mob attack, the sequence of violence, and allegations of police negligence before and after Swain’s death.
