A newly married woman attempted suicide by jumping into the Mahanadi River from the Sonepur-Sambalpur bridge on Sunday.
Fire services personnel rescued her and rushed her to the District Headquarters Hospital in Sonepur, where doctors confirmed she is stable and under observation.
Officials said the woman, a resident of Kainphul village under Sonepur police limits, fell into the river after leaping from the bridge. Passersby witnessed the incident and immediately alerted the fire services team, which launched a swift rescue operation.
Sources revealed that the woman had married just 15 days ago. She was travelling with her husband when an argument broke out over an undisclosed issue. In an attempt to calm her, the husband stopped their motorcycle on the bridge and began taking photographs. During that time, she suddenly jumped into the river, shocking her husband and bystanders.
Firefighters acted quickly after receiving information and managed to pull her out of the water following a tense struggle. Police have begun investigating the circumstances behind the suicide attempt and are recording statements from the couple and family members.
