The Odisha Government has approved the rollout of new, colour-coded ration cards for eligible applicants under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and State Food Security Scheme (SFSS). This move follows the recent elimination of ineligible beneficiaries from the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has directed all district collectors to coordinate special functions at the district, block, and urban local body (ULB) levels for the distribution of these cards. The newly issued ration cards will include both new applicants and additional family members added to existing cards.
The cards—printed in colour as per system specifications—will be distributed in laminated form. PHH (Priority Household) and AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) cards will each have distinct colour schemes generated digitally. The cards are to be printed on 170 GSM glossy art paper, measuring 6 inches by 4 inches, and laminated with 120-micron sheets.
Each card will cost no more than Rs 10, inclusive of printing and lamination. The final laminated cards will be stored at Block or ULB offices and handed out to beneficiaries during public events presided over by MPs, MLAs, and other dignitaries.
All printing and lamination work must be completed by April 22 to prepare for an official launch ceremony, the date and venue for which will be announced by the state shortly. The initiative aims to streamline benefits distribution and ensure that only eligible citizens receive assistance under Odisha’s food security schemes.
